This version (2022/08/15 11:05) is a Draft.

eMule with more users of Windows

Beginning with the 0.48a version, to meet the requirements created by limitations on Windows Vista, some options have been added (you can set them installing eMule or in a detailed way inside Options –> Extended –> Sharing eMule with other computer users) in order to allow more users of the same computer to use eMule and have different settings/folders each one.

Some of them change the default behaviour of eMule: in this page you can know more deeply what they are about.

You have 3 options (two of them are always valid, one of them is valid only for Windows Vista or Seven).

Each user has its own configuration and dowloads

Checking this option, that is the default one on Vista and Seven, every user will get a separate folder for everything. It will be possible to share different folders, download your files, set your preferences, add your friends, etc without interfering with other users.

As an addition, you can (on Vista or Seven) change the permissions of your folder and crypt it (the Administrator is always allowed to see everything).

The paths will be organized in this way (NOT on Vista and Seven):

Program files, Webserver C:\Program Files\eMule
Preferences, Serverlist, etc. C:\Documents and Settings\username\
Application Data\eMule\Config
Started Downloads C:\Documents and Settings\username\Documents\
eMule Downloads\Temp
Finished Downloads C:\Documents and Settings\username\Documents\
eMule Downloads\Incoming
Skins, Toolbar C:\Program Files\eMule\Skins
Language Files C:\Program Files\eMule\Lang
Logs C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\
eMule\Logs

If on Windows Vista or Seven, otherwise:

Program files, Webserver C:\Program Files\eMule
Preferences, Serverlist, etc. C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\eMule\Config
Started Downloads C:\Users\username\Downloads\eMule\Temp
Finished Downloads C:\Users\username\Downloads\eMule\Incoming
Skins, Toolbar C:\ProgramData\eMule\Skins
Language Files C:\ProgramData\eMule\Lang
Logs C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\eMule\Logs

Everyone has the same configuration and downloads (only available on Vista or Seven)

This option has the same effect of the third one (the default one until the 0.47c version), but avoids problems of permissions on the folders. Hence, if you use Vista or Seven and want to share settings, friends, servers, downloads and shared folders, etc, this option is the one you want.

Paths will be organized in this way:

Program files, Webserver C:\Program Files\eMule
Preferences, Serverlist, etc. C:\ProgramData\eMule\Config
Finished Downloads C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads\eMule\Temp
Download Completati C:\Users\Public\Public Downloads\eMule\Incoming
Skins, Toolbar C:\ProgramData\eMule\Skins
Language Files C:\ProgramData\eMule\Lang
Logs C:\ProgramData\eMule\Logs

Store config and downloads in the program directory

It is the default option until 0.47c version. It saves everything on the folder C:\Program Files\eMule

Program files, Webserver C:\Program Files\eMule
Preferences, Serverlist, etc. C:\Program Files\eMule\Config
Started Downloads C:\Program Files\eMule\Temp
Finished Downloads C:\Program Files\eMule\Incoming
Skins, Toolbar C:\Program Files\eMule\Skins
Language Files C:\Program Files\eMule\Lang
Logs C:\Program Files\eMule\Logs

If you'll swith between these settings eMule will remember you that the downloads, shared folders, etc will be forgotten. This happens because eMule will be told to read configs in different places than the actual (and if these files/folders don't exist they will be created with default values).

If you switch back to a previous value, when you'll restart eMule you'll get all as before because the previous settings will be read and nothing will be lost or deleted.

You could have problems individuating the /AppData folder, because Vista or Seven hides it by design. To see it you can go on the Control Panel–>Folder Options and in the View tab check Show hidden files and folders
